Journey into MADNESS and DESTRUCTION...in Technicolor!!!

A few months ago I entered this character (Bobby- I let my kids name him) into the FACA competition and he got schilacked in the first round.

I wasn't about to give up on old Bobby though, so I made a fake movie poster for him to live in. I really enjoyed creating the background for this fellow more than I actually liked coloring Bobby. Lots of layers in the background. The silhouette of the telephone poles is actually taken from a photograph right outside my window at work. I blew out the detail in the photo and gave it a half-tone treatment, a trick I've seen done by a phenomenal artist, David Ruben.

Hot off the Presses....

Here's an illustration I just finished up last night. This was a fun one to work on. It's to promote a local Lutheran (LCMS) church's confirmation class. My instructions were to come up with a knight/monk/adventurous/warrior character.

I designed the illustration and the background separate and then put them together at the end. I ended up coloring this a bit differently, experimenting with the texture brushes in Photoshop and using my wacom tablet almost like a paint brush.

Here's a step by step of the various stages:

Preliminary sketch given to client

Final pencils

Final inked illustration

Final inked background

Final colored figure on white

Final colored figure on black

Final colored background

Visit the Plague Doctor's Sanctuary....

Last week I gave a heads up on a project I'm working on with writer Ben Avery called "The Plague Doctor". We just created a blog that will document the development of this mythos as the year unfolds.

Special thanks to kick-butt graphic designer Brad Thomas from ID-33 Design for creating the logo.

Cogito Ergo Plague Doctor

Here's some conceptual character drawings I worked on last night after everybody went to bed. (My favorite time to draw.) The character's name is "Plague Doctor," and belongs to a story I'm working on with comic writer Ben Avery.

These drawings reflect about an hour and a half worth of work. Very fun, more to come on this.

Magazine Illustration

Man, it's hard getting back to work after 10 days of rest and yuletide celebration. Hope you all had a Merry (and Christocentric) Christmas. Always hard to let go of the thrill and nostalgia of Christmas. Especially after the previous weeks' anticipatory build-up.

Anyhoo, here's an illustration I finished about a week before Christmas for Ignite your Faith magazine (Formerly Campus Life Magazine). The article was about 24 hours in the life of a college student, and was supposed to be a bit of a takeoff of the 24 TV series.

Having never seen the show before ( I know, how lame is that?), I had to assemble quite a few visual references in order to get the right feel. I submitted three variations to the art director. They liked them, though I'm not quite sure which one they'll end up using.

For anyone who actually reads this here blog, which do you prefer?
