Geek Holiday

It comes around but once a year. It lasts but one day. Yet within that small window of time is contained as veritable schmorgasboard of geeky joy and delightsome goodness of unfathomable proportions.

It is...it is... Free Comic Book day.

Yes, this Saturday, May 3 2008 is Free Comic Book day. I will be celebrating with my fellow geek friends, Ben and Jeff, as we make our way on a pilgrimage to South Bend to one of the greatest toy stores I've ever been in before.

I get giddy just thinking about it.

My main goal on this day is to get as much free comic stuff as possible from as many places as possible.

In celebration of Saturday's event, here's a Spidey and a Speed Racer gouache painting I did for some friends a couple years ago. Happy Free Comic Book Day.

Fun Job

Holy Mackeral the past couple of weeks have been crazy. Been reminded once again that spending time with and treasuring my wife and children is far more important than making pretty pictures.

Anyhoo, with that in mind, here are a few illustrations I finished about a month ago for a client who wanted me to draw differing kinds of "hard to work with" employees. I used Micron pens instead of a brush to ink these and had a good old time with Photoshop's chalk brushes.

This was F-U-N.

Evolution of an Idea

Your looking at the 1st two pages of Plague Doctor which upon completion convinced me that something is wrong. the way the characters is rendered is not my style. Something felt strange and Ben agreed. I was in "Art Crisis" mode for over a week. It was horrible.

I've since gone back and redesigned the characters in a style that is sort of Tim Burton meets Jeff Lemire meets Dave McKean.

Check out the Plague Doctor blog for more developments.

Also, for what its' worth, I had a neat opportunity to be interviewed on the Parable Comic site. here's the link if you're interested in checking it out.
