Knee-deep in the 4th installment of The Complicated World of Charlie Valor. Even though I've been real proud of each preceeding issue that I've drawn, I'm pushing myself on this one visually. Tightening up on my drawing style a bit, trying a couple new things. Since the last issue was completed, I have read a few graphic novels, and the quality of art and story has inspired me to try harder on both the scripting and the art. Mostly Alan Moore and Frank Miller.

"Even when I thought, with most other well-informed, though unscholarly, people, that Buddhism and Christianity were alike, there was one thing about them that always perplexed me; I mean the startling difference in their type of religious art. I do not mean in its technical style of representation, but in the things that it was manifestly meant to represent.

No two ideals could be more opposite than a Christian saint in a Gothic cathedral and a Buddhist saint in a Chinese temple. The opposition exists at every point; but perhaps the shortest statement of it is that the Buddhist saint always has his eyes shut, while the Christian saint always has them very wide open. The Buddhist saint has a sleek and harmonious body, but his eyes are heavy and sealed with sleep. The mediaeval saint's body is wasted to its crazy bones, but his eyes are frightfully alive.

There cannot be any real community of spirit between forces that produced symbols so different as that. Granted that both images are extravagances, are perversions of the pure creed, it must be a real divergence which could produce such opposite extravagances. The Buddhist is looking with a peculiar intentness inwards. The Christian is staring with a frantic intentness outwards. If we follow that clue steadily we shall find some interesting things."

This is for a pitch for a toy company. They had to scrap their current Phantom headsculpt due to the fact that it beared to much of a resemblance to Lon Chaney. The figure and the color scheme was so awesome I hated to see it go, so I proposed another possible head sculpt idea. Here's a mock up of the final product.

Here's the beginnings of the colors for the next Charlie Valor cover. At this point, I've laid down flat color. Tints, shades, gradients, textures, the fun stuff, is yet to come. I honestly dread this stage, but once I'm over the hump, it gets to be fun again. I so covet the skills of the Mike Maihacks of the world who color as naturally as they breathe.

My humorous, though admirable attempt at comic book creation I did with my pal David in Highschool. I drew this my freshman year. Also, one of the last remaining copies as large quantities had to be sent out with Monday morning's trash once Dave moved away back in the late 90s: )

Later in life, this actually became a retro active inspiration for me. During my highschool art years, the art was pretty bad, but I drew with wreckless abandonment, never worrying too much about precision and accuracy. The drive and creativity was definitely there, and sometimes I revisit these old ideas to resurrect them in a different form.

Amazing scan of a defining page from Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" to recently go to auction. Drawn by Frank Miller, inked by Klaus Janson. There is not one unnecessary line in this piece. It would be amazing to just look at this in person nonetheless own it.

Not quite finished yet, but here's some art I'm doing for Cast-a-way Toys for a blister card design. This thing has kicked my butt, but I'm really liking it. Still quite a bit of tweaking to do. When I'm working on something like this, I get insanely immersed in it. Very difficult to put it down and come back to it.

This is one of those instances where my file is literally almost 100 layers big, and I'm wrestling with how the image looks on screen vs. how it looks when I print it out. Hopefully have it done tonight though.
